Michael Saur, Mercedes-Benz AG, has been awarded the Outstanding Presentation distinction at this year’s PCIM Europe Conference 2025 for his groundbreaking work related to the ARCHIMEDES project.
His award-winning paper, titled “Integrated High-Resolution Flux Sensing Array for Next Generation High Performance Traction Drives,” was recognised for both its innovative technical approach and the clarity with which it was presented during the conference.
The research presented proposes a direct flux sensing concept: An array of six high-resolution flux sensors is integrated into a traction motor to improve the control performance of an automotive traction drive. One PCB with the flux sensors is placed between stator laminations and end windings of an electrically excited synchronous motor (EESM) for BEV traction applications. The Integrated Flux Sensor Array (ISA) offers several advantages: it provides more sensor information from 18 flux measurements (+ temperature), has no moving parts, requires less space, and reduces costs by more than 80% compared to a mechanical resolver. Flux is measured with low distortion through low order cancellation applying spatial multipath sampling. HV-testbench measurements demonstrate closed-loop control using the ISA concept replacing the resolver also at low speeds.
PCIM Europe is one of the most prestigious conferences in the field of power electronics, bringing together over 800 industry leaders, researchers, and innovators. The Outstanding Presentation award is given only to a select few presentations each year, chosen for their technical excellence and engaging delivery.
Congratulations to Michael and the ARCHIMEDES team for this well-earned recognition.
